Food Vendors: How to Choose Your Next Plate

Use the food directory together with the dish guides to decide what you want to taste and what to ask before ordering.

Read a menu with a purpose

Decide whether you want a full meal, a shareable snack, or a cold treat. Look for a dish name, main ingredient, included sides, portion size, and price. If the menu lists only the name, ask for a brief description. A vendor can explain its own version more accurately than a photograph can.

For a first plate, compare roasted meat, rice, and plantain preparations. For a tasting route, choose a fritura, a pincho, and a different texture afterward. The Puerto Rican food guide explains these categories without promising a fixed festival menu.

Ask the questions that matter to you

Ask about fillings, broth, sauces, seasoning, and shared fryers if you avoid particular ingredients. Ask whether an item is made to order and whether the vendor can provide a clear answer about preparation. Do not treat an ingredient-free claim from another customer as the vendor’s confirmation.

Check accepted payment methods before reaching the front of a long line. If ordering for several people, agree on the items first and keep the pickup area clear. Confirmed vendor names and menus will be published when available; 2026 images belong to the historical archive.
